Beginning on July 1, 2015, adults will be legally allowed to grow up to four mature marijuana plants in their homes. While the limit of four plants is far from the 15 allotted to Washington adults, it should still be enough to satisfy the needs of many marijuana advocates in Oregon. But while growing your own cannabis will soon be legal, there are some things to keep in mind to help you avoid breaking the law. With some restrictions already in place, here’s what you need to know before you start growing marijuana in your home.
Important things to consider
Marijuana can be grown legally in most households in Oregon, just as long as they do not violate a few laws. If your home is within 1,000 feet of a school, you will not be able to grow cannabis. However, if you become registered as a grower or user of medicinal marijuana, you may be able to gain permission to harvest your own plants near schools.
If you plan on growing cannabis in your yard, plants must be covered behind a fence or barrier. It is considered a violation to grow marijuana in public, so all plants grown outdoors must be kept out of sight.
Selling cannabis and making concentrates
When it comes to possession of grown cannabis, adults are allowed to give away and use flower and clones of plants, but are not able to sell either. Unless licensed by the state, it is illegal to make money off marijuana in Oregon.
One popular cannabis product can’t be produced at home, as it is illegal in Oregon to make your own marijuana concentrates. Since concentrates are typically concocted with flammable butane, which can cause significant burns and is considered to be very dangerous, only those licensed by the state will be allowed to legally create cannabis concentrates.
